Just came across a review of this book by Anthony Kaldellis. Apparently, the author takes contrarian views on a number of commonplace conceptions of the Byzantine Empire, including an assertion that Byzantium was actually a republic rather than an empire. Based on the definition of empire” as a society in which a core nation extracts resources from peripheral ones, which seems to be the standard one, it is possible to see how the Byzantines might not meet this definition at some points in their history, and, at least according to Wikipedia a “crowned republic” can exist, if the monarch is sufficiently weak. It seemed worth mentioning here because it seems that the same descriptions apply to Byzantium Novum itself.

Has anyone read this book? If so, what are your thoughts about it?
